Beginning at release 7 3 of matlab mat files are actually saved using the hdf5 format by default except if you use the vx flag at save time see in matlab.

The matlab variables matrices arrays can be stored in mat files in order to read this data in python you would need a scipy io package.
And after that the loadmat is the way to go.
